The National Museum of Ireland collects, preserves, promotes and exhibits all examples of Ireland’s portable material heritage and natural history. The National Museum has moved the majority of its collections in an impressive new facility in Swords, North County Dublin. This 18,000 square metre building (200,000 square feet – the size of two football fields) is houses several million objects and collections.

The facility has high levels of environmental control and meets high standards of security and fire prevention. It includes collections storage areas and the necessary facilities for offices, archives, library, canteen, study rooms for visitors, and work areas for photography, illustration and conservation. The collections receiving measures include quarantine and freezing.

Storage Systems Ltd has completed several large installations over the years which includes numerous Mesh steel partition cages with hundreds of bays of Dexion HI280 shelving located inside each one. Each mesh lock up cage area has its own double sided push pad lockable door as well as an emergency escape door at the rear of each cage.

Storage Systems installed 2000 bays of steel shelving. Each bay of shelving is 2100mm high x 1000mm long x 600mm deep and fitted with 8 shelf levels for the storage of natural history collections. Each shelf level is capable of carrying 215kg’s U.D.L. and is free from nuts and bolts eliminating the risk of damage to the historic collections been stored. The total storage capacity of this project is 10,000 linear metres.
